This is the great unspoken and concealed purpose of NLP. How to learn what is actually going on in your mind that creates the emotional states you experience and the behaviors you produce.
It has been Tad’s mission for the last 31 years and mine for the last 17 years (I joined Tad in 2001 after running my own trainings in Australia for several years prior) which has been at the core of everything we’ve been teaching, doing, researching, and writing about.
It’s ultimately why we’re teaching the NLP, Time Line Therapy® Hypnosis and NLP Coaching trainings we teach.
Control over one’s mind is the art and science bringing your wants, wishes, dreams and goals to fulfillment and making it fact in the world based on your own capacity to direct your mind in a certain way. This seems to be a process of hit or miss for most unless the mind processes are first understood and then trained. Here is where NLP, Time Line Therapy® and Hypnosis remain THE decisive methods by which one can achieve just that.
Contrary to some opinion, creating what you want is not as simple as a snap of the fingers. It is a byproduct of a life lived under the direction of a well-trained mind.
In the symbology of the archetype of the Fool many times you see a dog either biting the Fool’s leg or as a nice puppy. The dog in the archetype – as in life – can be your greatest friend, well trained and obedient or it can wreak havoc in the house, chewing everything around and making a lot of damage.
You can see people as they go for a walk with their well trained dogs, where the four legged friend walks next to the person, has a good communication with the human owner, runs to catch a Frisbee only to return it for more play. Compare this with dogs dragging their owners into a run, going all over the place, biting, and being very “unfriendly”.
So is your mind. Either it can become your best friend or your worst enemy. An untrained mind is an unconscious mind operating under simple and primary reflex operant conditioning. The four F’s are all that counts for these minds. Fight, flight, feeding and … sexual behavior. Much like an animal. These minds are easy to manipulate and control.
All conflicts, all battles (on the battlefield or inside corporations, families, communities, etc.), and in every place and since the beginning of time begin and end as battles of the mind. No war has ever been won by sheer force alone. No struggle is determined on the strength of one’s physical force alone. The man with the bigger gun does not always win unless this is doubled by a very carefully orchestrated battle for the opponent’s mind.
Therefore, it only stands to reason that the most vital “fight” for well-being, prosperity and happiness any of us will ever face is the battle for our minds, the battle within; for achievement in the mind will determine success in all other endeavors.
Unfortunately, very few people ever consider the importance of the mind. As with any method of self-defense, careful and constant training of the mind is not only necessary but also required.
The question remains: are you – unlike all animals – just a bunch of primary conditioned reflexes? The four Fs? Is this all you are? A system of operant conditioning? And if you believe that, then this article is surely not for you.
But if you have a feeling, even if not clearly articulated, that there more to you, your personal consciousness, your Self, then the question remains why do you have a mind capable of self-recognition and will after all? A mind that’s capable of recognizing the self as different individual from the “pack”?
Knowledge and training of the mind has the power to effect tremendous change.
